This is the 4th and last part of my review of the Droid X360. You can check Part 3 here.
Taking it further
As you can see, the Droid X360 is a mixed bag of good and bad stuff. It has some very good functionality for an affordable price, but the poor tweaks on the OS as well as the terrible implementation of physical controls just ruin the whole point for people who are looking for a great emulator machine.
Nevertheless, the community is hard at work to improve things. I haven’t tested it yet, but a script containing some tweaks for the OS supposedly make the experience better: a patch for the physical controls, a series of fixes that remove all bloated processes from the OS, etc… Overall, this pack might make the device more useful than it is now, and the device was released only a few weeks ago, so this gives me hope for good improvements in the weeks to come. What the script does is the following (taken from the readme):
- - Backs up important system files
- - Removes Chinese apps, keyboards & other crap
- - Disables unnecessary Android services & components
- - Fixes Google Play & restores missing Google Apps
- - Installs Furan’s modified keypad driver
- - Touchscreen, wiFi & general performance tweaks
- - Replaces boring boot animation
- - Generally makes your Droid X360 more awesome
I will definitely give this script a try, and if you do have a Droid X360 as well and want to improve it, you can download all the necessary files here in a single archive. More details can be found on the dingoonity website.
Conclusion?
With the Droid X360, you get what you pay for. At $112, this is not a Vita killer and will not replace your favorite high-end tablet.
If you plan to use it as a cheap tablet, I think it is great. If your goal is to watch movies, play a few casual android games, as well as for a few emulators (but not for serious gaming!), or games that play better with a physical pad (e.g. Wagic), it is more than ok. This is a tablet with cheap but relatively powerful components, such as the AllWinner A10, which seems like a good CPU for a small price.
If you expect it to be the ultimate portable emulator for all your retro gaming needs, then it’s a no go. It has more raw power than a PSP and would be able to play more games (example N64 games) close to full speed, but the bad physical controls ruin the experience for most games. As a result, for emulators that are working at a reasonable speed on both the X360 and the PSP (example, GBA emulator), the experience is much more enjoyable on a PSP. Also, as a highend device for current-gen games, it does not compete against the Vita.

The Vita has a brighter screen, with less glare. Also, more modern games ![]()
The only question is: will a few software or hardware mods improve this device? Some communities are hard at work to see if this device can be fixed (see above), and it is possible that a second version could fix this issues, or that community provided solutions will fix the major issues, turning it into a great portable device.
As far as I’m concerned, for a bit more than a hundred bucks, I already know that I will use this more than my Vita. Then again, I’m not a hardcore gamer, and I’m more interested in the possibilities to tweak the device, as well as the multimedia functions. For hardcore gamers, the Vita will still be the device of choice, while if you’re really into emulators, the PSP remains the best solution, assuming you don’t mind some games not being at full speed (e.g. some snes games, or the N64 emulator)
Please note that I didn’t test the quality and durability of the components here. It is possible that the battery will die on me in one month, or that the screen will fail, who knows…
-
Does it have a cookies option? >_>
-
^I dont know, if u mean that as sarcasm. But yes, it saves several options when browsing, also via your gmail linked to the Play Store and Youtube account.
Anyways Wololo, first post here, and I received my Droid X360 yesterday, all in all, you have like the same Droid like me
. Also every few seconds a bzz, while I vaguely think it has something to do with the speakers. Test the device out with earphones plugged in.Also, a special note: the Analog sticks work as a PSP, they are not build like N64/PSVita stickwise. My battery went from 25% to 0%, but that is because it’s probably never been charged (some batteries need to get used more to lenghten lifespan).
Playing notes: Dpad is terrible for action games, or games where you have to move constantly, it indeed does not register every press, and hell – I have trouble pulling off a Hadoken in Street Fighter. This doesnt apply for simple games, like turnbased games (eg Final Fantasy).

Well make a part 5 review if something happens or if it gets a patch that makes it run better.
-
i predict that there will not be a phone or tablet which is equivalent or superior to a console, within the next 50 years.
-
That’s kind of funny, since 50 years ago we didn’t even HAVE computers. You seriously think that tablets won’t advance past the current consoles in 50 years?
-
-
It sucks to hear that the hardware problems are universal.
I was hoping it would be selected Droid X360′s, but it seems everyone has the same problem.
Maybe we’ll see a hardware revision later on. I still don’t get how that went past the quality control, if they even had one.
-
its a Chinese rip off, do you really think anyone made sure it worked right ? :3
-
Yeah I would guess haha.
-
-
-
Seriously? O_O i was wondering if this console has an update or whatever
-
Wonder if it has a recovery partition and if someone can figure away to root it?
-
Oh, nvm found out a button on the top that looks like hard reset makes is go into recovery.
-
-
Good review, nice reading, a few comments…
Battery life will be a bit pants, but you can expect that from Android..
Is this thing rooted? And does it have a vulnerable recovery? If so, a custom ROM may be all you need to solve the software problems. It may go some way to helping with the touchscreen sensitivity and some other hardware issues you may be having too.
If you haven’t already, have a look over at xda-developers.com and see if anyone’s working on a custom ROM for this thing over there. That’d be nice.
-
I’m so getting this. I already put my vita on craigslist. I got tired of waiting for the new firmware and ps1 games. I assume that ps1 is one of the emulators on this nifty device. All I want is ff7. Once the vita is sold, I’ll place an order for this. FYI, if anyone is interested, ps vita wifi, 32gb mem card, rayman origins and zagg invisishield for $350, obo. Well taken care of. I bought a few games of psn, but when I clear my account on the vita, I assume those will be gone too.
-
If all you want is PS1 games what’s wrong with the PSP?
-
-
Hey guys, I’m the guy who wrote the script mentioned in this article, so I thought I’d quickly answer a few of your questions.
Yes the Droid X360 is rooted. It actually comes that way out of the box. No you cant use Android recovery or Clockwork Mod to restore/install roms. The physical buttons aren’t mapped directly so you cant navigate the recovery screen, HOWEVER, you can use Livesuit software to flash roms and restore.
There are no custom roms available yet, I’m working on one as we speak. In the meantime, download my script and try it out. It includes a patch that makes the controls significantly better and much more playable. I wouldnt go as far as saying it fixes them but it will definitely make you feel better about your purchase lol.
-
But does it bake…
-
Can you upload some of the built-in applications?? They are apks in the system/app directory… Would love to try those enulators on my android device.. Haha.. If i remember correctly, there is a nintendo 64 emulator? And other stuffs…
Note: you can’t access system without root. So you might want to root that baby.. Hahaha
-
Lets get some info on the Ouya
-
The OUYA is looking better and better! now they have added XBMC! You’ll know it from the Xbox1 a great OS!
I’m so glad I’m a Backer and there’s less than 40 hours to get in so hurry and Back project OUYA!!!!!!!!!!
-
well, Ouya is a very cool concept and device, but i think is not comparable these kind of devices.
Ouya is a Set Top Box, this means, there is no inclination sensors, light sensors, touch screen, microphone, etc (nothing normal to a medium/high-end device)
is like comparisson of PSVita with PS3. is not comparable. PS3 is for home, and have his own kind of use (move, ps2, multiplayer, tv out, etc)
psvita… is a portable device. is much near to have the experience of the PS3, but not the same.
and yes, psvita have another hardware, sensors, and way to be used.
is the same for ouya and any portable device. i think they are not comparable, but complementary may be.
(you can see this video where i give a sense about what means “complementary” for android devices)

Hi wololo some questions.
How is the performance of snes/psone/n64 emulators?
If someone fix the controls does it gona be perfect?
-
So…Sony!! Your move. With Ouya, X360, etc.. the Vita looks more and more like a paperweight for me. Well I need no paperweight, so more like a door wedge; I do need one of those. Games are ok, or expensive as hell. PSone support was promised and still not here. All the other apps, FB, netflix, etc. are all things my tablet and my laptop and my tv and my cell phone and my desktop already do. I got it for the games; the Vita games and the promised psone games. So far it’s been good for everything else but that; at least for me. The games I have played on it have been PSP games I got off PSN. Should have gotten that, at least I’d have HBL.
-
Droid 360 or Xpleria play my bday on 8/9
-
Honestly, when is the VITA gonne be patched ? If I want a starting animation beeing nyan cat for 10 minutes I can with this device. Cannot be done with VITA.
-
Sony. Failing miserably..u guys might as well release the JB tools now
-
So, this thing can actually play Vita games? This may be a dumb question but can it play them also online?
-
Hi guys!
i wrote a little review about this device, if you get interested on read it.http://forum.openhandhelds.net/index.php/topic,145.0.html
hope, you found useful!
greetings!

Mr wololo is it just the d-pad buttons that don’t make contact or all of the buttons, and when u say the joysticks are not analog does that mean it just has four direction or what does that mean and are the joysticks work enough to play games like Zelda ect.?
-
Great review!
According to the manufacturer, an updated X360 will be released soon. (Within 2 weeks)
Updates that i know of:
“The upgrade will improve the button control, and making the overall experience much better.”I don’t know if that’s hardware or software related. It looks like software wouldn’t need a new revision, if it could be patched or reflashed..
Would be interesting, if the soft/firmware would be the same.. (If script still works and is of use.)
I’m getting the upgraded version directly from the manufacturer, so i’m curious..
-
Great 5 part Review Wololo. I am quite intrigued by this X360. I had never heard of it before now. Its design is kind of reminiscent of a PSP Upgrade/pre Vita device. Honestly, it kind of looks like the PSP should have looked from the beginning.

Hell yeah Galaxy Fight~

Apparently we're on twitter too
