64% of users ready to boycott Sony products?
A few months ago, Sony sued a security researcher, George Hotz, for jailbreaking the PS3.
At some point, the group Anonymous even started protesting against Sony, both in the digital world and in real life.
We all have our opinion on this story, but it seems this lawsuit didn’t help Sony’s image. A while ago, I asked you if you were going to boycott Sony’s products, and the results are in. As I type this, 36% of the voters said they won’t boycott Sony, 35% said they will boycott Sony, and 30% said they would buy “less” Sony products [than they would have if this lawsuit hadn’t happened]. Overall, this means that Sony now has a bad image as a company for 64% of the voters. Way to go, Sony, I’m sure your marketing department has a few words to say to your legal department 🙂
Now, /Talk is just a small forum, and our members probably don’t represent the average customer’s opinion… or do they? This blog is of course biased, and the majority of my readers probably don’t represent the average Sony customer population. But the same way movie downloaders are also the ones that buy the most Blu-rays, I believe that people who hang out on a technical forum such as /talk are probably the people who will shape the future of device purchases…
Anyways, if you like or dislike these numbers, it is still time to give your opinion on the subject here

I will buy no Sony Products, and although I have purchased five toyotas, I will not buy them either if they contain Sony Products, because of the SM message in YouTube restrictions by Sony. I hope Toyota does not make the mistake of installing anything with Sony’s name in their vehicles because it will cost them my busiuness if they do.

you’re right, many who say they won’t buy another sony product will buy as soon as something catches thier eye, but some of us really do mean what we say…… and I for one am through with Sony, too many times have they *** on thier customers.
The 64% is bogus. I technically fall in the buy less, not because I ‘boycott’ but because I only bought a PS3 and PSP from the whole Sony range. So in reality only 34% will really ‘boycott’. So will these 34% stop buying BluRay movies?
Not sure, NGP seems awesome. But, we’ll have to wait and see. Sadly, the NGP won’t end up like the psp, because all the devs aren’t buying a ngp. Probably. But I really do hope that the NGP is hacked.

I’m sure with the JailBreak and the “signed” homebrew and exploits….it’s going to be like 82% of us will NOT be buying new stuff from Sony. WHY WOULD YOU NEED TO NOW…….

The only Sony product I’ve bought in 5 years is my PSP. Their stuff just seems like *** to me.
And after all this lawsuit *** with Geohot and this 64% *** there better not be anyone buying the NGP and later crying for a hack.
dunno bout it…. but NGP’s probably the only thing that will sell well with their new set of gadgets if it features well enough interests and the price is not as stiff as GO was first released…. 😀
in my country the psp and the ps3 is selling well and probably few or no one even knows about this because they sell the product with already hacked firmwares and the aren’t bought through umd or Psn they sell it by iso’s and cso downloaded from the internet for less than a dollar
I will never buy a sony product again, Sony are *** people fuking others to make money while suing people helping them make their products better while they break fundamentals rights!

well, i voted yes but with that i mean i will avoid as much as possible from sony. there are many things that are from sony without their logo on it. and you should’t even expect they are from sony in anyway.
LOL, then you aren’t boycotting at all. I am convinced the people that said yes, don’t even know the meaning of boycotting. If you boycott you don’t buy any sony, not their cd-roms, not their lcd panels, not their electronic chips, nothing.
So no cybershot, no cell phone, no ebook readers, nothing.

Bad reputation in the eyes of hackers maybe. Me, I don’t care, or rather I am glad, because of Geohot my 3rd party USB devices don’t work, since that is how he first wanted to hack the PS3.
